Road south from Alamein

There is a paved road leading south from Alamein (serving the oil fields south of the Qattara depression)that joins the Cairo - Baharya road about at the halfway point. The road is pretty bad, but can be managed with an ordinary car. There is a similar "paved" road from Baharya to Siwa.
Both roads need a military permit that is obtainable in Cairo. Some people say they managed to get permit for the Baharya-Siwa road at the police station in Baharya, perhaps similarly things may be arranged in Alamein, but do not count on it. At the moment there seems to be very high sensitivity to people sneaking into the desert without permits (see my post one below), there are new checkpoints everywhere, so please DO NOT TRY without permits.
