mrauk U

Ferry to avoid unsafe bridge

Bath time

Pig local species mix with willboar

Tutti sembra in armonia!

Tuc tuc to go to boat lunch

Bus to nagpali

Invece no il traghetto arriva e ci porta dall’altra parte!

Tutti masticano betel e sputano in continuazione !

Note tecniche:

Traditional bamboo house

Mrauk U

Ratanabon Pagoda

Here we are leaving from Bagan, for Mrauk U, a city in the north in the province of Chin. The journey will be long and up and down the mountains …

We leave at 6 in the evening, jumped on a truck to take us to the bus station … from there we understand that we have to take a bus and then on a typical tuc tuc taxi and then  again on a bus traveling for 10 hours on roads that fortunately we do not see but feel, up and down the mountains! Finally we’ll find out in the morning that the bus goes up even on a boat!

Everything, except for the surprise of the ride on the boat happens in absolute punctuality! This people speaks little English and even if you do not know the messages are sent and what you asked for and to which no one apparently replied, suddenly materializes!

Htukkantthein Temples

Mrkau U is another archaeological place, where due to the shape and construction of stone temples, in the past it was thought that they were forts… but no these are also these temples …. I think that after this set I will not want to see anymore for a while

Mrkau U is beautiful, not yet affected by tourists, maintains its look of a quiet village. Tourists there are just a few, also because of the guerrillas still in the north.

The people are very friendly, there are no handicraft shops and the pagodas are scattered in the valley, a bit run down but unique in their kind! Almost medieval!

Lots of carving representing the Buddha and the different classes of the population. In the afternoon we wall around to explore the nearby pagodas, pay the tourist tax of 5000 kyatt, and then we go looking for a place to watch the sunset! We find one and then another, there is a lot of haze but the colors are always beautiful! We know a couple of people from Trieste who encourages us to take a boat trip, which they say is beautiful!

The taxi driver of tuc tuc who had brought us to the hotel had already offered us this possibility and for 25,000 kyatt per person we agree to leave with the boat the following day!

In the evening in bed early we are tired of the long journey and we want to be ready the next day for our adventure on the river!

In the morning our driver / guide picks up on time and we go to join 3 more people and after a bumpy road on the tuc tuc,Ape Piaggio taxi, we arrive at a dock of fishing boats! Here our boatman awaits us, with 5 plastic chairs on the improvised transport boat for tourists!

Tribal Chin tattoos

We  began the navigation of this beautiful river inhabited by different villages and ethnic groups, mainly farmers … here you cannot see plastic or garbage, everything is quiet, ordered, the children laugh and play cheerful and people do not even look at us! Here there is no electricity or running water, there are some panel used to charge batteries!

Famous in this place are the old Chin women, who have tattoos on their faces, which were made up to 50 years ago to women aged 12 and over!

Now this custom is forbidden, so they are disappearing and they have become an attraction! In some villages they sell cotton scarves made with rudimentary looms, which I would have bought too, but they were very rough!

I liked this exploration of the Chin villages, but it left a bitter taste in my mouth, we went to their houses and we took pictures of them and apart from some candy for the children, we did not give anything! Looking back on it, it’s not really right! We should have given something a donation maybe, but no, they told  you not to give money otherwise you instill bad habits, but in our world we pay models for photos …. reflecting on this after I felt how we ‘western people’ walk among these people , we takes what we need and go! I felt ashamed and today I learned something from these women!

Italian school project

In a village we also find a school signed by the Italian Moses project

The villages are beautiful, the houses all made of bamboo, the richest of wood. Pigs, goats, cows and hens roam everywhere and live in the village in contact with the people! Everyone seems in harmony!

We see many peanut plantations and beans of all kinds! Irrigation is manual!

Maha Bodhi Shwe Gu

A village is dedicated to cutting the bamboo that is transported by water to the country, or those who want to spend a little to buy it, can come here to buy it! Also here the river provides all the needs of people, water to drink, to wash, cook , transport, irrigation everything!

Bamboo ready to ship

We stop for lunch in a structure where they sell coffee and two or three other things, these spaces equipped with bamboo platform raised from the ground and covered by a roof, are offered to those who pass and want to stop to eat … do not make you eat, bring your own and also offer you free tea in Myanmar is always free!

Tramonto

I buy a coffee to spend something!

Our guide tells us a little about the Chin people’s desire for independence from the rest of Myanmar. There are still fights and guerrillas nearby! He says that the state of Chin is rich in resources but the government takes everything and sells part of its mines and resources to China. We speak to him of the unity that the people should have to oppose the military government, as our friend Monk in Mandalay told us, but he doesn’t believe so!

Stone bass relives in Maha Bodhi Shwe Gu

We return mid-afternoon and our tuc tuc driver take us to see a beautiful stupa and then another consisting only of 5 Buddhas, 4 at the base and a very suggestive one above!

The sunset is approaching we go home to take a shower and go back to look for the best place to watch the sunset!

The next day sunset as from manual and then bike to enjoy the last glimpses of this beautiful village!

We leave Mrkau U in a hot afternoon of February, get on a bus , really …. I do not know how to describe it, it is indescribable!

Place for the legs very limited, overloaded as usual!

They put us in front … according to them is the best place in reality you can not stretch the legs for and so we exchange seat with a couple very happy to exchange!

The first part of the trip is a kind of nightmare …, we pass between very poor villages, mostly Muslims, the water that they drink and wash in is the same! We probably would not even use it for the garden! Watch how life flows in these poor villages from the height of an air-conditioned bus and the music is like a movie and feel unreal!

At one stop I use the WC, two planks crossed with a  hole direct on the river!

The rivers here and elsewhere receive all the trash that sadly is brought to the ocean! If the rivers are dry they are trashed with waste, then when the monsoon is there, it will take care of it! We are traveling to the ocean, where the river goes , but where will this garbage go?

Dukkantain Paya

On the other hand there are no structures that can mitigate the situation and plastic and styrofoam are widely used in all places where there is a bit of development creating situations that in the future I think will give many problems!

After 2 hours we are still waiting for the ferry that has to transport the bus across the river because the connecting bridge is not safe, will it arrive or will we sleep here on the bus?

But no, the ferry arrives and takes us to the other side! In the evening the  music is loud , the air conditioning is freezing! We have nothing warm, usually they give a blanket but this time no!

The bus loads other pAssengers and as there is no more room, they sit them in the middle of the lane! Mostly all of them chew  betel and spit continuously! This time traveling .

But we stop at one of their restaurants and eat not bad, we do not know exactly what. Some kind of vegetables and rice! Some make us ahahaha pictures! Now it’s our turn!

The journey then resumes in freezing , on uncomfortable seats, single lane roads, lucky enough there are not many other vehicles around! We arrive at 7 in the morning , exhausted but safe and sound, I must say that the drivers of these buses are truly exceptional … oh I forgot to say the drivers drive barefoot!

sunset

Technical notes:

Given the small number of tourists, hotel bookings is not needed and if u are on a budget you can find better deals that on line (Happy garden is good one). Is difficult to find who rents scooters since in theory illegal. Frequent roadblocks on roads and areas in the north are not passable, the situation between Myanmar and Chin army is tense and not infrequent clashes even just 10km north of the city. Difficult to have news about the what is happening . The temples are all within walking distance but more convenient especially in the heat to take a bike. The most convenient way to get there if you have tight schedule is fly to Sittwe and then take a boat that takes you to the town. Check schedules to not get  stuck in Sittwe, there are also private boats that can bring you Mrak u, that by the way is pronounced miau (like the noise cats do)

Myanmar Army uses helicopters, fighter jets against civilians in Rakhine

Fighting near Rakhine’s capital of Sittwe reached a fever pitch last night when the Myanmar military used helicopters and fighter jets against civilians in a week-long clash with the Arakan Army (AA), according to Myanmar Now.
Locals in Pone Nar Kyun Township told the Burmese language outlet that the Myanmar military used aerial bombings against civilian structures in Boddaw village, destroying a home.
“They have been fighting for 5 – 8 days; it has been more intense recently. At night, they bombed our area with fighter jets and helicopters. A helicopter destroyed one house but luckily the people were able to escape. Villagers are running away because of the fighting,” Boddwa village resident, Ko Thein Shwe told Myanmar Now.
Fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army has become increasingly intense since late last year, and hostilities continue to escalate. Just this past week, AA forces took 11 Myanmar army soldiers as prisoners and seized their weapons after a clash in Chin State’s Paletwa township, close to Rakhine state.
Over the weekend, in the second deadliest attack by the rebel army, they also killed nine police officers and injured two others during an attack in Rakhine State’s Ponnagyun township.
Union government officials are expressing their concern about the intensifying situation between the Myanmar military and AA and expressed their desire for peace talks if the AA would sign the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), the spiritual successor to the Panglong Agreement, one of the founding documents of independent Myanmar.
Myanmar has been embroiled in the world’s longest running civil war, which began just a few years after gaining independence from the British in 1948. Despite numerous attempts by the NLD government to end the conflict, the dream of a peaceful Myanmar is still out of reach.

Myanmar Now.
